If you are having a dental implant but do not have sufficient bone in your upper or lower jaws to place a dental implant, a bone graft or augmentation may be recommended by your implantologist.

BONE GRAFT / AUGMENTATION

A bone graft or augmentation is a procedure which replaces lost bone in your jaws in order to accommodate for your dental implant placement with sufficient support. This procedure will involve using a natural bone substitute such as Bio-Oss to replace lost bone.

Depending on the extent of your bone loss, you may require one of the following procedures:

  • Simultaneous augmentation - done at the same time as your implant placement.

  • Staged bone graft - done 6 months before your implant placement if you have extensive bone loss.

WHAT IS A BONE GRAFT

Our natural teeth have roots which are fused into our jaw bone. The dynamic action of our teeth on a daily basis stimulates the bone in our jaw to maintain and continue regenerating healthy bone. Once a tooth is lost with its associated roots, the bone in that area is not stimulated as much as it once used to. This can lead to bone loss and resorption in the area.

A bone graft uses a natural bone substitute to replace lost bone, to help accommodate for your dental implant to be placed

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The placement of a dental implant will require a small surgical procedure, similar to a tooth extraction and a filling combined. This involves making an incision on the ridge of your bone to reflect back the tissue and accommodate for the implant. This tissue will need to re-heal back to the bone. There may be some swelling and bruising depending on the complexity required, but this would be discussed beforehand. As with any healing stage, there may also be some post-operative discomfort.

Our clinicians are trained and committed to making your treatment as comfortable as possible. Please do not hesitate to voice any concerns with any of our clinicians during your appointment.

  • Implants can last a lifetime if taken care of correctly. Dental implants – like teeth – can be affected by the bacteria in the mouth. Therefore, gum disease may occur if they are not cleaned properly and there is poor oral hygiene. It is imperative you are a regular attender at your dentist in order to focus on good oral hygiene practice.

  • Dental implants are either made of grade 4 titanium or some mixture of titanium with alloy. These materials feature a high strength and excellent osseointegration and healing capabilities. This allows these implants to have faster healing rates and generally less post-operative discomfort. There are numerous clinical trials that have backed the preservative properties of dental implants.

With careful planning, correct training and correct pre- and post-operative instructions, dental implants can be very safe.
